The Brendan Martin Cup visits our school.

.We were very proud to welcome the Brendan Martin Cup to Bayside. Two of the Dublin Ladies Team, Laura McGinley and Emer Ni Eafa  visited the classes and the children were delighted to see them as many of them had watched the final. I am sure many of our pupils have been inspired and will be lining out for Dublin in the years to come!

Spring has arrived and the Junior Infants have been busy using their green fingers.

Reading in Junior Infants

Junior Infants are well on their way to becoming fantastic readers. They have been working really hard at blending sounds to make words. They are now so good at reading that they beat their teacher in the decoding competition every single day.

 

A visit to the Post Office!

The children wrote a letter to Santa to see how he was getting on and to tell him how good all the children in Room 13 have been this year. We went out for a walk to deliver our letter personally at the Post Office! Everyone was very excited and had a wonderful time. We also called into the church to look at the Advent wreath.

On Tuesday the 20th of October all of the pupils in our school went on a nature walk. The Junior Infants had a fantastic time. Ms. Burke from the Green School Commitee gave  us all Hi Vis vests so that cars could see us. We wear them when we walk to and from school now.

On our walk we spotted lots of signs of Autumn. We collected leaves,helicopters and conkers. We also saw lots of animals. We even found a fairy door.

We all want to thank our parents and relatives for their sponsorship money.

Spring has sprung at last!

Our beautiful garden.

We all got a lovely surprise on Monday morning when we returned to find our school garden in full bloom! Now that the weather is getting warmer we have all had an opportunity  to get out to the courtyard to admire the beautiful flowers. We even spotted our resident frogs and their frog spawn. We try to be very quiet when we are in the courtyard as we don’t want to frighten our frogs.

Green fingers

The boys and girls in 2nd class have been selected by Innocent Smoothies Sow and Grow Project to develop their green fingers. We were delighted on Monday when a box full of goodies arrived at our classroom door. As part of the project we have been asked to plant cress, courgette and pumpkin seeds. Celebrating World Book Day

The children in Rooms 5 and 6 dressed up as some of their favourite characters from books they have read. You just might spot Horrid Henry, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, Pippi Longstocking or Harry Potter in the pictures below! There’s also a Wally from Where’s Wally hiding!

Researchers

The boys and girls in Room 5 have been very busy using our laptops to research for our mini projects on space. We have gathered a lot of information and have become very quick at finding information on the internet. Thanks Mr. King for all of your help!!

Room 11 and Room 12 made the most of the beautiful sunny day today!  Hopefully we will get lots more opportunities to dine al fresco!

Our Trip to the Courtyard!

We made our first summer trip to the courtyard today! We had a lovely time smelling the flowers and looking at all of the growth.  Ms. Clohosey brought the camera to take some class photos.  We got some hilarious action shots of our class after she almost fell into the pond!!

Green Schools Update

Hi Guys,

We have started work on our next Green Flag. This year we will be trying to win a flag for Travel and Transport.

We have set up a new Green Team and we went out together on a walkability audit with Sandra Pokrant from An Táisce.

We are trying to establish a safe walking route to school where people might carpool and then Park n’ Stride from Bayside Shopping Centre. As the name suggest this would mean parking your car at the shopping centre and then walking to school from there. This would hopefully mean less traffic around the school in the mornings and afternoons.

Here we are outside the school looking at the road markings that make it safe for us to cross the road.

Outside our school we have yellow markings on the road and railings. The yellow markings help to remind traffic that they must slow down and they cannot park outside our school. The railings are there to stop any cars from parking on or mounting the path. They also stop children from running out of the school gates and straight onto the road.

We are very lucky to have a safe pathway from the shops to the school. There is plenty of room for people and buggys to walk along. On our walk we heard the birds singing and saw some lovely trees and plants.

Speed bumps on the road help the cars to drive at a safe pace

Concrete pillars in the middle of the path ensure that no cars can access it. This keeps it safe for walkers

When we got to the carpark there was plenty of parking spaces and space.

We think that it would be really super if some families that travel to school by car might consider having a go at “Park n’ Stride” from Bayside shopping centre, especially coming into the lovely summer weather

Mona Lisa Mystery

After finding out lots of interesting facts about Leonardo da Vinci we had a mystery art lesson.

Each of us had a small square which we enlarged, we then put our jigsaw pieces together to reveal our mystery masterpiece.

 

We think we did a super job!

Mystery Material Boxes

We had a great time using mystery boxes and guessing what was inside. Here are some of the items we had to guess and descibe using our sense of touch only:

Pineapple

Furry mittens

Sponge and wire wool

Watermelon and sweetcorn

A rubber baking tray

We had to put our hands inside the box without looking and then guess what we were feeling and write a description of how it felt.

We were not quite sure what to expect inside the boxes, we used words such as: fluffy, soft, hard, smooth, flexible, rubber, grassy, wet, squishy and rough to describe the different objects. Here are some of our reactions to what was inside the box.

Piggy Banks

We have big plans to save our money in our Piggy Banks!!!

We made them from recycled plastic bottles and papier mache. They were lots of fun to make. Have a look…

 We even went on a space mission for NASA to planet Atopia! We met lots of funny looking Atopians! We wrote stories about our trip when we got back.

Bird Watch!

There was great excitement in Room 12 today! We were quietly doing our work when we heard beautiful singing from outside our window!  There was a big flock of birds eating our bird cakes!  We spied on the starlings so that we wouldn’t frighten them away.  They had colourful designs on their feathers.  They had beautiful, sweet singing voices.  By lunchtime, there was only half a bird cake left!  We are glad that the birds liked our bird cakes.

Watch out for some fine fat starlings flying around Bayside!



Perfect Pancakes!

Mix a pancake,
Stir a pancake,
Pop it in the pan;
Fry the pancake,
Toss the pancake,
Catch it if you can!

We had great fun making pancakes yesterday.  We mixed the batter then we cooked our pancakes.  They were yummy!  At the end of the day we had a pancake flipping competition!
