Science week

We had a great time during science week. We did loads of experiments. Here are a few pictures.

We did lots of Halloween Art. Cats, ghosts, and scary castles were to be seen in all the Junior Infant rooms. Here are some of the pumpkins we found.!!

School Tour

On the 10th June we went to the Pine Forest for our School tour. We got a bus early in the morning up the Dublin Mountains. We went on a hike and spent the afternoon doing different crafts. We were very tired when we returned to school.

Action Day

Our class was really lucky, we were chosen to take charge of the Green School Action Day. We were asked to demonstrate water based experiments to the other second and first classes. We demonstrated how to make a lava lamp, we looked at what colours make black ink, we made quick sand and lots of other great experiments.

Van Gogh’s Starry Night

We learned all about Vincent Van Gogh’s life. We then looked at some of his paintings from his blue and yellow period. We recreated our own version of Starry Night, one of his most famous “blue” paintings.

Our Pre Communion Mass

On Thursday 14th of March we had our Pre-Communion mass in the school hall. The hall was beautifully decorated with lots of artwork and lovely daffodils. Fr. Joe said the mass and we were delighted to have Sr. Marie there on the night too. We sang lots of hymns and played our recorders. Our parents and teachers were very proud of us all!

First Penance

Dear Parents/Guardians of Children in Second Class,

Your child will receive the Sacrament of First Penance

 On:      Monday 15TH April 2013

 At:       11.00 a.m.

 In:       Bayside Church

The children will be brought to the church by their teachers at 10.55 a.m. and they will be seated in pre-arranged places.  Parents/Guardians are welcome to introduce the child to the priest for confession at the appropriate time. Parents should sit on side aisles near the relevant class. (In the absence of a parent/guardian the teacher will introduce the child)

Please ensure your child is in full school uniform on the day.

As the children will be receiving a sacrament we ask you to encourage respect for this solemn occasion.

We look forward to celebrating this sacrament together.

 Yours sincerely,

 Áine Haier,

Pre-Communion Mass

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We would like to invite all parents/guardians of pupils in second class to attend our
Pre-Communion Mass in the school hall on Thursday, 14th March at 7.30 p.m.  Unfortunately due to space considerations, only two people can accompany each child.

Children need to be in school in their designated areas for 7 p.m.  Full uniform must be worn.

As usual, we will be appealing for donations of daffodils to decorate the altar and hall.  These may be left in the school foyer on the morning of Thursday, 14th.

We are looking forward to seeing you all on this very special occasion.

Yours sincerely

Áine Haier

In school we learned all about Louis Braille. He was blinded by an awl when he was little. He was the inventor of Braille, a system of reading and writing used by people who are blind or visually impaired.

We began writing to Ms. Flynn’s class. Ms. Flynn is a teacher in the school for the visually impaired in Drumcondra. They wrote us a letter in print and in braille. We must write back to them again soon.

We wrote our names in braille using márla.

Tag rugby

We really enjoy playing tag rugby with Stephen every Thursday. We are all getting really good.

Music in the Classroom

Group photo outside the National Concert Hall.

On the 26th November 2012 we went on a trip to the National Concert Hall. During the weeks leading up to the trip we learned lots of songs so that we would be able to sing along! Here are some photos from that we took on our trip.

Science time!

Us with our agar plates!

Testing teacher’s laptop for germs.

Rosella’s mam Christine is a biochemist. She works in a lab that makes creams, gels and ointments. She came in with Emma’s mam (Selena) to do an experiment with our class.

When Christine makes the special medicines it is important that she keeps her workspace germ free because germs can make you ill.  This means she must wear a special germ suit, mask, hairnet, goggles and boots. She also has to test the air, the tables and her hands for germs. To do this she uses a dish with special jelly called agar jelly. They test the surface with a swob and then put a sample on the jelly then they put it in an oven so the germs can grow.

Selena and Christine gave us all agar jelly plates and everyone decided what they wanted to test. We swobbed teacher’s laptop, our tables, the taps, the door handles and even our hands. We put each sample into the agar dishes and Christine took them to her lab to grow them. We got to dress up in the germ suits too. We had so much fun. We can’t wait to see our results!!!

Thanks Christine and Selena

We had great fun dressing up as biochemists!!!!!
